United Way and other Agencies

We have begun our Third Round Project here in Vicksburg with the United Way and 9 other agencies in the area. We are working on several different small projects over the next 2 weeks in order to improve the infrastructure of the buildings the nonprofits are working in. On Monday we volunteered as a whole campus for the celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and worked with these same organizations.

Over the last few days we have shampooed carpets, painted walls, scraped paint, pulled wallpaper, painted a sign, and other small organizational and cleaning tasks. It has been pretty relaxed and not a lot of work, but I am enjoying staying on campus. It is nice to make a local impact in this community, and get to know the services that the nonprofits in Vicksburg provide.

Other than that, I have been finishing up Graduate School applications and looking for a job for the summer time. I will update when we get to Noxubee for our fire project!

New Year, New View

Day 130: Happy New Year everyone! I had an amazing Christmas break with my family and friends. It was relaxing and entertaining. It was really nice to spend a week at home with my parents and siblings, and to spend another week in Boston with Jilisa and my friends from college.

I returned to Vicksburg on Thursday after a sad goodbye with Jilisa and strong feelings of resistance about returning here. It’s really tough when being home is so comfortable and feels like where I should be. When I moved to Vicksburg in August I was excited for the new experience and what was ahead of me. This time when I returned to campus I knew what to expect and what I was coming back to, so it was tough to leave.

The last couple days I have been settling back into Amerilife and preparing for our next project. Our team is really excited for our project in Brooksville, MS at the Noxubee wildlife refuge. We will be staying in two bunkhouses on the refuge with access to laundry, canoes, and beautiful scenery. We were shown pictures of our housing and some of the views of on the refuge and it looks great! I’m really excited to see birds, deer, and other wildlife. I hope that the project will be as fun and challenging as we are expecting because I’ve been a bit discouraged about this experience.

It hasn’t be quite what I expected and I’m a little disappointed, but I am promising myself that I will make an honest effort to take the next 5 months and make the best of them. If I come into this second half of the year with a negative attitude I will be miserable, so I need to try to stay positive and find meaning in this experience.

The next week will be full of training and preparation of my last few grad school applications. Then we will be staying on campus for a couple weeks to work with the United Way with some renovation and improvements here in Vicksburg. I will try to update frequently and include pictures from Christmas break and the next few weeks!
